The South.

South Carolina has some of the most backwards politics in the US. Otherwise, it's a great place with plenty of friendly people. While there's no wilderness here, there are some pretty swamps and forests and coasts. You just have to know where to go.

I've been here a few times, once camping on the coast, and once for the easy walk up Sassafrass Mountain, the highest peak in the state.
